Refrigerant Management System Helps Supermarkets Comply with EPA Standards

According to EPA Standard 608, supermarket operators must keep detailed records proving that their refrigeration systems do not leak more than 35 percent of their charge per year. If an operator cannot prove their leak rate is less than this limit, the EPA could fine them over $32,000 per day, per site – a significant incentive to track usage and ensure compliance!

To help retailers comply, Emerson Climate Technologies Retail Solutions recently introduced the Refrigerant Management System, which uses a patented algorithm to measure the amount of refrigerant added to a refrigeration system over time.

By knowing the weight of the refrigerant tank before and after charging, the Refrigerant Management System automatically calculates the amount of refrigerant used. The system’s integrated computer collects refrigerant data automatically, eliminating guesswork and subjectivity. More importantly, it allows retailers to prove EPA compliance through detailed reports that are available both at the site and remotely.

When operating as a standalone unit, all records and maintenance logs are stored in the system's internal memory and are accessed with the system’s keyboard and monitor. However when connected to the store’s Ethernet, users may remotely retrieve refrigerant usage and maintenance logs. This allows retailers to mine for valuable trends or archive the reports for later analysis.

The Refrigerant Management System is not just a simple refrigerant tracking device. It also functions as a maintenance tracking platform. Technicians responding to a service call may log the symptoms, cause of the problem and actions taken in the Refrigerant Management System’s internal computer. This provides a standardized, easy-to-read maintenance log for technicians to review.

"The Refrigerant Management System will help our customers prove EPA compliance," said Bill Coulombe, president of Retail Solutions. “In addition to the benefits of compliance, retailers will also be able to track their maintenance activities in a new and intuitive way.”

Giving supermarket customers a unique platform to monitor refrigerant leakage and track maintenance logs, the Refrigerant Management System expands the benefits of the Intelligent Store™ architecture.
